You’ve all seen those garages in your neighborhood where it looks like you could eat from the floor and not a single thing is out of place. And you’ve probably seen those garages that couldn’t hold a car under any circumstances because they are filled with stuff.

Which type of garage are you the owner of? If you have one that could use some help in the organization department, you’re not alone.

Most people want a good garage organization plan, yet when it comes to actually doing it, well, then it doesn’t happen. But don’t despair, you can do it. Read on for the 6 steps to a clean and organized garage

1. Set Aside Time, Purge

Cleaning your garage takes time. It’s not an hour’s job either. So, if you’re serious about getting organized, set aside a weekend to get the job done.

Start by purging. Get rid of things that are cluttering up the space. If you have old sports equipment or kids’ toys no longer being used, get rid of them. Remember, the more that you get rid of, the less you have to organize later.

2. Empty and Sort

You need to empty your garage completely to get a fresh start. As you are emptying the garage, start to think about what to keep and what else you can get rid of.

Also, as you empty the garage, sort like things together. Put all your lawn and garden materials together. Put sports gear together. Keep tools in another pile.

Create piles with common items.

3. Clean and Treat Garage Floor

Once you have the garage emptied, it makes sense to deep clean the floor. This is also a great time to consider treating your garage floors

They will look better, be easier to maintain, and will give your garage the look and feel of a space that is meant to stay on the path to permanent organization.

4. Create a Plan

While your floors are drying, you can think about a plan for your garage. Now that you have all the items sorted by category, you can think about what areas you want or need in your garage.

Do you want an area for tools and a workbench? Do you want an area for shelving to hold sports gear, holiday things or yard items? If you have bicycles and scooters, you might need overhead storage to hold the bikes when not in use.

5. Set up Storage

Build shelving and put items in clearly labeled tubs. Make sure you keep like items together and label so it’s easy to find things later.

Resist the urge to get cabinets. While it might hide your stuff, it can also be easy to jam stuff in and not keep up with the organization. Open shelving and see-through tubs are most effective so you can always locate items and easily figure out where to put them away.

6. Backdoor Station

Most people have a backdoor in their garage leading into the house. It makes sense to plan for the things that might land by the backdoor. Set up a shoe rack, for example, to hold shoes before they go into the house.

Put a doormat there to prevent extra dirt from entering your house.
